M Phil/PhD Programme
CDS M Phil Programme in Applied Economics

The CDS MPhil Programme, started in 1975, is among the few in the country where students from a Master’s level degree in any discipline may seek admission.  It is affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, which awards the Degree.

Teaching of economics to a mixed group of students has been a fascinating, though challenging and difficult exercise, involving careful choice of the essential components of economic theory, tools of quantitative analysis and actual problems for application with special reference to India.

The focus on applied economics from a plural perspective and adaptation of effective learning tools add to the uniqueness of this programme.  The curriculum, structured to stimulate the interest of students with prior training in economics as well as those from other disciplinary backgrounds, has undergone regular revisions over the past three decades.

The Programme commences with a three–week Foundation Course in economic theory and mathematics to equip the students for the core courses.  The core–programme comprises the 16–credit intensive coursework during the first two semesters and the dissertation study of 8 credits, to be completed in the next two semesters.  The coursework offers electives to facilitate diversity in research interests.

From this year, CDS allows selected candidates to seek provisional enrolment for PhD in Economics as well, either after the MPhil coursework if obtaining CGPA of 6.50 or after completing the entire programme, including dissertation, with an FGPA of 6.0, and submitting a viable research study proposal at the stipulated time.

The Programme is suited to students of any discipline interested in developing their skills in applied economic research, and professionals in Governmental/non-Governmental organisations, media and consultant/ research institutions, who wish to enhance their skills in applied economic analysis.

The Programme has received students from all over the country, with diverse backgrounds including engineering, medicine, agriculture, forestry, law, sociology, history, political science and mathematics, besides economics.  The Programme offers admission to scholars from abroad as well.  309 students, from  thirty two batches till 2006–08, have been awarded the MPhil Degree.

The 36th batch is scheduled to commence on July 27, 2010.
