In tune with its professed goal of providing necessary IT services to the faculty and students of the Centre, the Computing wing of the Centre is equipped with the necessary organizational and computing resources. To facilitate the computing services to course through the length and breadth of organization efficiently and effevctively, we have planted major IT-service centers targeted to various categories of users. All these centers are managed by the IT-wing headed by the Systems Manager. A small description of these centers follows:

Computer Classroom: 22 Pentium machines with shared printing facility. The place is mainly meant for students and project staff. This facility helps us to provide almost one machine to a student and hence we can say that our students have a personalised computing environment in the Centre.

Library Information System: Another major service is the Library Information System. Unix-based library server is housed in the Main computer-room at the Computer Centre. LIBSYS software is used for implementation of the information system.

Students Bay: A network facility, which can be used by the students at any of time. The main objective is to facilitate the word-processing activities of the students. A database facility is also installed in this bay.

Other major Services: Apart from the above mentioned service locations, PCs have been provided to all faculty members and officers of the various administrative and finance sections of the Centre.

Besides managing/optimizing/distributing the centre's computing resources the IT-unit provides the following services:

• Programming and software management support to the faculty, staff and students
• Periodic computer familiarisation programmes for fresh batches of students
• Periodic training programme for the faculty members based on assessment of felt needs
• Round the clock Net access to the faculty members (from their office) and students
• E-mail service for all the members of the CDS community- with web-based and POP access.
• Facility to host web sites for faculty members
• Facility to store backup files on the Intranet that helps a user access the resources from any workstation.
• Instant messenger service
• Direct link to library information system
